Old glue residue to back of tile.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a very rare original antique tile from the Merton Abbey studio of William de Morgan, one of the great pioneers of the British Arts and Crafts movement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll of William de Morgan's work is highly prized, but the animalia tiles in lustre are very hard to find outside museums and private collections.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tile is hand painted with an image of a young deer. The tile itself, which has a slightly bevelled edge, is made using the dust pressed method and has a slight relief pattern of foliage, stamped on the front in a regular pattern. The deer is painted over this pattern. A painted background of grasses and foliage was quite often used on William de Morgan's animal tiles of all periods, but this impressed pattern is rather unusual.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe deer also appears to be painted with some degree of relief detail, please see images.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of de Morgan's claims to fame is his \"re-invention\" of the ancient Islamic technique of reduction fired lustre - a notoriously difficult technique due to the precise pigments and firing conditions required – which he worked tirelessly to perfect.  His work varies considerably in the success of this, but in this example he has achieved a very striking deep red.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe back of the tile bears the William de Morgan Merton Abbey mark. Slight wear to gilding on rim only.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis lovely vase is finely potted in porcelain with a reticulated rim and two handles, and decorated with applied gilt, silver and dark grey underglaze colour  in a semi relief method.  The decoration is in the Japanese style which was all the rage in England at the time the vase was made - a period often known as the Aesthetic Period. The front of the vase shows a stork flying near bamboo, and the reverse shows a butterfly and prunus blossom.  There is the usual printed Royal Worcester mark on the base which is not very clear so the date code can not be read. It has a lovely ring when tapped.  There are small firing irregularities as you would expect with this type of ware, but effectively it is as it came out of the kiln.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a lovely bowl by Reginald Marlow, one of the pioneer British Studio potters.  The dish uses a chun (or Jun-yao) glaze, which the Chinese developed during the Song dynasty.  The use of this glaze was revived in England in the early 20th century by Charles Vyse, who re-discovered the true ingredients for the glaze, and was developed further by Marlow's teacher William Staite Murray.  A feature of the glaze is that it tends to run from the high points (on this dish, the rim) producing a light grey colour to contrast with the main blue, and where it is thicker it can be almost white. He started his own workshop in 1918.  All of his work was hand made.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe vase has been thrown by hand (it has the original label \"Tourné a la main\") and decorated with deeply carved designs including a lion passant, stylised foliage and a Greek Style border. It has two handles closely applied to each side.  The design is picked out in a black glaze against a pale ash glaze ground. Venus sits on a rock covered in drapery, scantily clad herself, and holds a branch in her hand (possibly this is an olive branch with which she is scolding Cupid).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tile is mould cast from a very well made original, it is finished in a pinky-brown glaze which has fired with a very nice iridescence where it is thicker.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe edges of the tile are slightly tapered. so that it could fit snugly into a frame. There are also however two hanging holes in the top edge which were clearly made before firing, so it appears it also could have been intended to be wall hung on its own.  There is an old hanging wire.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe marks are the Mintons impressed mark, the year code for 1901 (there are also date codes), the shape number 2523, and another impressed number 594 with a star, meaning unknown.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMintons was a major company in Staffordshire, Europe's leading ceramic factory during the Victorian era, and an independent business from 1793 to 1968.
