Hayter established himself during the 1820s, with portraits of notable figures such as the Duke of Wellington and the opera singer, Guidetta Pasta. A larger than life character, he helped launch the careers of many young artists and also threw parties in his flat in Hyde Park Square, London, whose guests included Marlene Dietrich, Elaine Stritch and Ava Gardner. The drawing is in sepia wash, with an ink border and grey wash fill in the margins.  It is by Bernard Picart, and produced by him for his own engraving (see below for details).  The drawing has been squared for transfer to the copper plate. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe drawing is inscribed at base \"Le Sueur inv, B Picard D.\"  A label on the back confirms the attribution and also states that the drawing was from the Chariatte collection. This is confirmed by a small red \"AC\" ink stamp for Chariatte on the verso of the drawing (see image), and also the collection number L.88a is marked in pencil on the verso.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEustache Le Sueur (1617-1655) was a French artist and one of the founders of the French Academy of Painting. He is known primarily for his paintings of religious subjects.  As far as we know the original painting of this scene no longer exists, but the Picart etching does exist.  The etching was titled  ‘Jacob Abreuvant les Troupeaux de Rachel.’ (Jacob feeding the herd of Rachel) and was further inscribed \"Grave par B. Picart, d’apres le dessein de le Sueur du Cabinet de Mr. V Huls, a la Haye.\".\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe print was published in ‘Impostures Innocentes ou Receuil D’Estampes etc.... ‘, by Bernard Picart, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1734. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBernard Picart or Picard (1673 – 1733), was a French draughtsman, engraver, and book illustrator in Amsterdam, who showed an interest in cultural and religious habits.  Picart was born in Paris and died in Amsterdam. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe collection of Achille Chariatte was partly sold at Sotheby's in 1923 and partly given to the British Museum. On the back of the mount is the artist's label and another label noting that it is from the Bartok Series.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFirmin trained at the Colchester School of Art in Colchester, and after National Service in the Royal Navy, Central School of Art and Design in London. The leaflet was issued to establish the Order of St. Christopher. Members of the Order were asked  to provide \"personal and helpful service according to individual opportunity\"  It would appear that Florence also designed a small bronze statuette of St. Christopher which was issued by the Home to new members of the Order.  It is more than likely that Florence's work on these drawings and designs were given gratis.  Her love for the subject matter of them is evident in the quality of the drawings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis particular drawing, showing a teenage girl carrying a younger one, looks like it is a portrait of actual children. Florence tended in her stained glass design work to use her workshop staff as models, and she seems to have adopted a similar approach here.  The subject also reflects the story of St. Christopher who carried a small child over a stream. Each lithograph had a drawn frame so that the print could be pinned to the wall. In the spirit of post-war optimism, artists responded enthusiastically. The scheme was a unique attempt at giving children access to original works of art in a period of austerity but ended in 1949 because of financial problems. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis delightful print is full of charming detail and captures English rural life with a slightly nostalgic feel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe print was printed by the Baynard Press and published by School Prints Limited.  Although a relatively large number of prints were sold, they are now rare.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJohn Nash (1893-1977) was born in London and educated at Wellington College. On the advice of his older brother, fellow artist Paul Nash, he avoided art school as a formal art training would destroy \"the special thing\" that John possessed. He was a founder member of the London Group and also showed with the Camden Town Group. He was a very accomplished wood engraver and lithographer and served as an official war artist in both the World Wars. On one occasion in 1917, Nash was one of eighty men ordered to cross No-Mans-Land at Marcoing near Cambrai. Of these, only Nash and eleven men returned. They were not illustrations to be published with the book (Hogarth had engraved smaller illustrations some years before for a book copy of Hudibras), but stand-alone. The prints are from the original copper plate engraved in c1726 by Hogarth. Prints like these from the original copper plates by Hogarth are rare and usually very good impressions. This is because Hogarth sold the plates, and they were not in the possession of his widow Jane or the publisher John Boydell, who issued most of the Hogarth prints in the 18th century. Boydell and Baldwin Cradock \u0026amp; Joy, who published Hogarth's works from 1822, used copies made by Thomas Cook, until about 1840, when it appears that Hogarth's original plates were acquired and began to be printed again. Tagged \"The modern Quixote\" when it was published in 1662, the poem was very popular. Hudibras is an anti hero rather less sympathetic than Quixote. This print shows Scotin's original engraving.
