Her uncle was the renowned Jamaican potter, Cecil Baugh, who trained with Bernard Leach in England before moving back to Jamaica. It was through Baugh that Madge became interested in pottery. She was the first woman to graduate in ceramics from the Jamaica School of Art and Craft, and following her graduation she moved to England in 1967, establishing herself in Nottingham, where she still lives and works.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe catalogue for one of Spencer's exhibitions (Double Vision: An exhibiton of contemporary Afro-Caribbean art, held at Cartwright Hall, Bradford, 8 November 1986 - 4 January 1987) said that “Madge’s African heritage forms part of her self-awareness as a potter, so much so that on viewing a Nigerian exhibition she felt an immediate empathy with the forms she saw there. Hoy, Danish by birth, had studied at the famous Copenhagen School of Art and worked at Bullers in Stoke on Trent when she first came to England, moving to Doulton in 1952.  Her work fused some of Doulton's famous techniques with her Scandinavian influence, and this dish is a good example.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe simple design and muted tone belie considerable technical artistry in the dish . It is a lovely example of Peter Sparrey's work, and bears his impressed stamp.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePeter Sparrey was born in Worcestershire and has been potting full-time since leaving school at sixteen. After serving a three year apprenticeship as a production thrower at the Guernsey Pottery, Channel Islands, he set up his first professional studio in 1987.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePeter produces finely thrown individual pieces of work using stoneware and porcelain clay bodies, decorated with traditional high-fired Far Eastern glazes including chun, tenmoku, celadon and copper red.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom 2004 to 2012 Peter established a new studio in Normandy, France. The inside is finished with a light brown slip which come to half way down the outside, and the bottom half of the jug is a warm orange.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eBelow the handle is Rosemary Cochrane's impressed mark and on the bottom her paper label. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eBorn in 1947, Rosemary Cochrane is the author of a book on salt glazed ceramics and set up the Saltglaze Workshop in Pontypool, Wales, in 1985. Yasuda trained at the Daisei-Gama Pottery in Mashiko from 1963 to 1966 and established his first studio there. Those that do survive are often damaged or incomplete as here.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eWhat makes this teapot particularly special is that it was certainly painted by Minigawa Masu (1874-1960), the most famous painter of these teapots, who rose to fame during the early Mingei movement in Japan.  Masu Minagawa was highly acclaimed by Soetsu Yanagi (1889-1961), the founder of the Mingei Movement, and Shoji Hamada, who promoted pottery within it.  She also worked personally with another famous exponent of the Mingei movement, Bernard Leach.  The hand painted Mashiko teapots were held out as a beacon of Mingei production by the \"unknown artisan\", although clearly some of the makers, including Masu, Hamada and Leach, became extremely well known.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eAccompanying this teapot is a letter dated 1961 from Leach to its former owner, stating that the teapot is \"undoubtedly\" painted by Masu Minigawa, which he can confirm by the fact that he had all her patterns painted for him on paper.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe teapot is made in earthenware clay with the depression on the base which was characteristic of these teapots and which Leach explains avoids a tendency for them to crack while drying (the potting is very thin).  It is then covered in a white slip onto which the abstract landscape designs have been painted in manganese and green oxides.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eSansui (landscape-decorated) earthenware teapots were widely produced in Mashiko during the late Edo period (1603 - 1868) and on into the early Showa period (1926 - 1989).
