Good used frame with one small scuff on bottom edge.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThis extremely well made tile is usually described as showing a Dickens character, although we have not established which character it is.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe tile was made by Sherwin \u0026amp; Cotton, using a technique called emaux ombrants (enamels with shade), developed by their artistic director, George Cartlidge, who worked for them from about 1897.  It involved the use of a low relief picture, on which a glaze was applied, giving the appearance of colour differences and shades, although that is only produced by the thickness of the colour.
