One of the flanges of the lid fused to the base during firing, and has had to be pulled apart, leaving a small piece stuck to the base - see image.

This is a superb piece of vintage pottery, probably made for an exhibition. However it seems quite likely that it remained in Geoff Townsend's studio on account of the firing fault mentioned above. We bought it at a sale which included other items from his studio.

The jar is hand built (not wheel thrown) using a heavily grogged clay, and finished in an oxide decoration in which the grog in the clay has burnt through to give a speckled effect. The top edge of the lid and the impressed potter's mark are highlighted with fired on gilt. The lid is shaped to fit with the decoration. The style of the piece shows the potential influence of Colin Pearson and Robin Welch.

Geoff Townsend was a West Midlands potter who was a prominent member of the Midlands Potters Association.

https://chestersfarmgallery.com/products/vintage-british-studio-pottery-large-stoneware-jar-by-geoff-townsend-c1980
