Antique hand painted framed tile, c1880, Edinburgh, John Knox's House, Canongate

Condition: Tile in very good condition, crazing as expected. Good used frame (tile has not been examined out of the frame)

This tile looks like it was painted around the end of the 19th century and this would tally with the clothing worn by the people in the scene. It is entirely hand painted in enamels which have been fired beneath a glossy glaze (it was not transfer printed).  The title on the tile reads "John Knox's House & Canongate Edinbro".  There are no marks on the back of the tile, which is earthenware.
