This tile is one of the series of twelve, based on Shakespeare scenes, which John Moyr Smith designed for Minton in 1872. It was his first design for them which was followed by many more. Minton produced the tile in various colourways, this being a simple black printing on a cream ground.
The scene here is Anthony and Cleopatra Act IV scene IV, in which Anthony puts his armour on before the Battle of Alexandria, and Cleopatra tries to help him.
The back of the tile is not marked, but has the waffle pattern typical of Minton tiles.

John Moyr Smith was a key name in the history of Victorian design. He worked with Christopher Dresser and on his own account was a major influence in the Arts and Crafts movement.
