Size:  19 cm external depth, width at rim 25 cm.

This superb bowl is beautifully thrown in a cream coloured clay with iron inclusions, turned on the outside but with throwing marks left on the inside. The bowl has a very precise rim and central turned line around the belly, finished further with iron based slip, and fired unglazed at stoneware temperature.

It is marked with the impressed stamp of Arthur J Griffiths (1928-2016). Arthur worked at Crowan Pottery for Harry Davis and at the Leach pottery in St. Ives. His friend and colleague David Leach asked him in 1954 to be head of Ceramics at Lougborough College of Art and Design, where he spent almost three decades before retiring in 1983 from Loughborough College of Art to concentrate on his own work. He was an active member of the Midland Group Gallery and a member of the Craft Potters Association.
