Chris Carter, huge vintage studio pottery stoneware bowl, tenmoku glaze, c1980

Size: 50 cm corner to corner, 44 cm across width, 24 cm external depth.

Condition: Excellent condition, no chips cracks or restoration.

This superb bowl is huge and sculptural as much as functional in intent, although it is stoneware and could be used inside or outside.

It is early work of Chris Carter, from the period 1977-1980, when he was experimenting with tenmoku glazes on large functional forms, different from the more overtly sculptural  forms for which he is better known now.  This bowl is decorated with a large brushed swirl. The bowl has Chris's mark on the base.

Chris Carter was born in 1945 and has been making pottery since he opened his first studio in 1971. His work is widely exhibited  in leading galleries throughout the UK and also internationally. Work held in public collections include the Ashmolean, Oxford, Birmingham Art Gallery, The Walker Gallery, Liverpool and The Sainsbury Collection, Norwich. His work is featured in Modern Pots, Hans Coper, Lucy Rie and their Contemporaries: The Lisa Sainsbury collection, Thames and Hudson, 2000. His pots have also been sold by leading auction houses including Bonhams, London for many years.
