David Frith, Brookhouse Pottery, large stoneware charger or shallow dish, c1990

Size:  35.5 cm (14 inches) square, external height 6.5 cm.

Condition: Excellent condition, no chips cracks or restoration.  

This is a classic and beautiful example of David Frith's work. The charger is hand thrown and decorated on the upper side with a design of stylised flowers within a hatched border, using cobalt and tenmoku glaze with a resist method. The underside of the charger is ash glazed.

The piece does not have an undercut foot-rim. It could be hung on a wall using a hanger, or used as a centre piece on a sideboard etc.

There is no maker's mark but the charger is clearly the work of David Frith, using one of his signature designs.

Margaret and David Frith have been making reduction fired stoneware and porcelain at Brookhouse Pottery in Denbigh since 1975, and are widely known for their beautifully crafted pieces using a variety of decorative techniques. Both born in 1943, their potting career goes back to 1963. Both are Fellows of the Craft Potters Association and David is a selected member of the Crafts Council. They have work in many private and public collections and exhibit widely in the UK and abroad. They have lectured overseas and given workshops in Europe, Africa, India, America, Japan, Israel and New Zealand.
