This superb print is typical of the work of John Paige, a renowned wildlife artist who was one of the founding members of the Society of Wild Life Artists now the premier body in its field in Britain.

John's technique often, as in this print, involved the use of torn paper as a screen medium in the printing process, a deceptively simple sounding method, which resulted in the delicate imagery that this print demonstrates.  The textures of the ink on the paper are wonderful.

This print was acquired by the Derbyshire Schools Museum Service in the 1970s (the label and museum number are on the back), and as such it has excellent provenance.

John Paige (1927-2021) was educated at Rugby School, where his role model was former teacher Robert Talbot Kelly. On National Service from the age of 18 he travelled widely and was able to observe wildlife. He then studied at Cambridge University and met Peter Scott, who helped John get a post as warden in Uganda National Parks.  It was only after this that John studied Art and Design in Birmingham, and moved to printmaking as his particular medium.  He used a variety of techniques, usually hand burnishing prints rather than using a press, so that he had complete control over the finer details.  He joined the newly formed SWLA in 1964 and exhibited widely, as well as teaching and leading wildlife travel excursions.
