Julian Trevelyan limited edition print, Rain Forest, 1967

Condition:  Very good condition, mount and frame new.

Signed etching with aquatint and soft ground scrim wipe, from two steel plates, and published by Editions Alecto on handmade Crisbrook paper.  The print is from the Africa suite which was published in 1966-1967.  It is signed in pencil by the artist and also title by him and numbered 23 of an edition of 125. .

Julian Trevelyan (1910-1988) was born in Surrey and in early 1930s, after studying at Cambridge University, moved to Paris to learn etching. Trevelyan worked alongside Ernst, Kokoschka, Miró, Masson and Picasso and during that time his work was surreal, portraying everyday objects with a dreamlike quality.

In 1935 he set up his etching studio at Durham Wharf in Hammersmith, where he remained until his death in 1988. From 1955-63, Trevelyan worked at the Royal College of Art and became Head of the Etching Department. Highly enthusiastic, he became an influential teacher, with students including David Hockney, Ron Kitaj and Norman Ackroyd.  He was appointed a Royal Academician in 1987.  His second wife was the artist Mary Fedden.
