This is a very striking print in Japanese style and using the Japanese woodblock colour printing technique.  It is signed in the print by M E Philipp and also signed in pencil below and numbered 174 of 317 (?).  On the reverse is the original label of the framers Matthias Watts & Co Ltd., and another with the title and a short explanation.  The label suggests a date of this print of about 1935.

Martin Erich Philipp (1887  - 1978) was a German-Jewish painter and graphic artist. He studied 1904-08 at the Kunstgewerbeschule Dresden, and in 1908-13 at the Kunstakademie and was a master student of Gotthardt Kuehl and Richard Müller at the Dresden Academy.  Philipp received numerous awards, including the Saxon State Medal at the Bugra Leipzig in 1914.  His best known works are his colourful prints of birds, often exotic species, which he studied at Dresden Zoo.  He was married to Else Staps who was also a colour woodcut artist.
