Original watercolour drawing of fungi, Hydnum Repandum, Dennis Harle SWLA, 1969

Size:  Frame 32.5 x 44 cm, drawing (sheet of paper) 19 x 28 cm.

Condition:  Drawing in excellent condition, new mount and good used frame.

This superb drawing look like it was done for a book illustration, and it is in pencil with watercolour and neatly titled top right. The common name for the fungus, Wood Hedgehog, is also written in a lighter pencil bottom left.

Hydnum Repandum is an interesting edible fungus or mushroom which grows in coniferous forests and has an unusual appearance on account of the spikes which grow underneath it, instead of gills.

Dennis F. Harle (1920–2001) was a painter with a strong interest in wildlife subjects. He was born and lived in Sandwich, Kent, by profession a nature reserve warden. He studied at evening classes, Ramsgate and Canterbury Schools of Art, and was a founder-member of Society of Wildlife Artists. 

Provenance: These studies were part of the collection of The Wildlife Art Gallery in Lavenham, Suffolk.
