Stan Dobbin large woodcut print, Strangeways Prison Manchester, c1970, framed

Condition: Very good condition, mount and frame new.

This print in "brutalist" style depicts the famous Strangeways Prison (officially HMP Prison Manchester) in Stan Dobbin's home city.  The main feature is the central ventilation tower which rises above the city of Manchester as a major landmark.  Alfred Waterhouse, who designed Strangeways in the mid 19th century, was inspired by the architecture of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Stan Dobbin also made a woodcut print of that building, from a similar angle (Please see my other items)

Stanley Dobbin (1929-2021) was born in Birmingham but moved to Devon and later to Manchester where he worked as a printmaker, painter and teacher of art. His prints are mostly woodcuts and are heavily influenced by the German Expressionists.

This print is Signed by Dobbin in pencil, titled and marked as an artist's proof. It is not known whether an edition was made - sometimes Stan made prints for book illustrations only.  This print is from Stan's studio sale.
