This is a lovely example of the fine lustre ware produced by Wedgwood in the 1920s to designs by their most prominent designer of the time Daisy Makeig Jones.
This bowl has the Chinese inspired Dragon and Clouds design. Gilt dragons are round the outside with gilt clouds highlighted by red and green underglaze colours, over a blue mottled lustre ground. On the inside, against a paler blue lustre ground, there is another dragon in the centre, fantasy birds flying and a Chinese style border in gilt with red and green highlights.
The bowl is marked on the base with the usual Portland Vase mark printed in gilt, the pattern number Z4829 painted in gilt, and some other painter's marks.
Daisy Makeig Jones is most famous for her Fairyland Lustre Ware designs, more multicoloured and detailed than this bowl, which still today are very highly prized. This is one of the range of "ordinary lustre" patterns she designed for Wedgwood, to provide a more affordable offering for their strong market for lustre ware.
