This is a very fresh sketch by Winfred Wilson, possibly a study for a larger painting, with the understanding of use of paint appropriate to her subject which Wilson invariably shows. The painting is not signed but there is no doubting the artist, as stated by a label on the back.
Winifred Wilson (1882-1973) was by occupation a farmer but she came from an artistic family and her sisters May and Violet Wilson were both painters. Winifred studied with Sir John Arnesby Brown and exhibited locally, nationally (the RA, ROI), and internationally (the Paris Salon and the USA).  Her most numerous and best known paintings were studies of horses.
