Antique Sherwin & Cotton emaux ombrants "Dickens" tile, M377, framed, c1900

Condition:  Tile in very good condition, light clean crazing as expected, not examined out of frame but no apparent losses or damage.  Frame very good.

Sherwin and Cotton were the most successful makers of emaux ombrants tiles.  The technique, which involves flooding with a single colour glaze a low relief moulded tile was developed by their artistic director, George Cartlidge (who went on to become a famous designer for Hancock & Sons).  The result is a photographic like image on the tile.

This is one of the earliest emaux ombrant tiles made by Sherwin and Cotton, and is usually described as a Dickens character, although we have not identified which one.. The number on the back, which is the pattern number, is M377. There is also a trade mark impressed stamp on the back.
