Condition: Print in excellent condition, new mount and frame.

This lovely wood engraving is titled in pencil "Patanjali-Shiva" and it depicts the Hindu author, mystic and philosopher Patanjali as an incarnation of the serpentine demigod Sesha. Patanjali is thought to be the author of the Yoga Sutras, a classical Yoga text.  The print is signed in pencil by the artist and numbered 26 from an edition of 50.

There is not much biographical information on the artist Henry Edward Bates but he is known to have exhibited c1926-1939.  The print speaks for his considerable talent as a wood engraver and artist.
