Martin Erich Philipp, original colour woodcut print, Cardinals, c1935, framed
£240.00
Size: Frame 51 x 40 cm, print inside mount 36 x 26 cm.
This is a very striking print in Japanese style and using the Japanese woodblock colour printing technique. It is signed in the print by M E Philipp and also signed in pencil below. On the reverse is the original label of the Graves Art Gallery, Birmingham, and another with the title and a short explanation. The label suggests a date of this print of about 1935. The print is not numbered but typically Philipp produced an edition of about 350 prints.
The print is entitled Cardinals, but more specifically these are Red-Crested Cardinals (Paroaria coronata), not actually part of the Cardinalidae family. It is a native of South America. Philipp probably observed the bird in Dresden Zoo, which he used to gain material for many of his ornithological works.
Martin Erich Philipp (1887 - 1978) was a German-Jewish painter and graphic artist. He studied 1904-08 at the Kunstgewerbeschule Dresden, and in 1908-13 at the Kunstakademie and was a master student of Gotthardt Kuehl and Richard Müller at the Dresden Academy. Philipp received numerous awards, including the Saxon State Medal at the Bugra Leipzig in 1914. His best known works are his colourful prints of birds, often exotic species. He was married to Else Staps who was also a colour woodcut artist.
