This print is a very accurate lithographic copy of a 15th century woodcut print by the great German artist Martin Schoengauer.

It was published iin 1879 by Richard Fisher in A Catalogue of A Collection of Engravings, Etchings and Woodcuts, with the title "Our Saviour Appearing to Mary Magdelene in the Garden."  The title usually given to this engraving is Noli Me Tangere.

The print is on fine hand made Van Gelder watermarked paper.

Martin Schoengauer (c1450-1491) was second only to Durer in Northern Europe during his lifetime.  His style is typically Teutonic, clear and precise.  He was a painter as well as an engraver but is now chiefly known for 116 engravings, which unfluenced many contemporary and later artists.

This print is in a conservation mount. It came from the collection of the Derbyshire Museums Educational Services, curated by Barbara Winstanley.
