This striking vase was made in the studio of Roger Guerin (1896-1954) a renowned Belgian ceramicist from the village of Bouffioulx near Charleroi. He started his own workshop in 1918.  All of his work was hand made.

The vase has been thrown by hand (it has the original label "Tourné a la main") and decorated with deeply carved designs including a lion passant, stylised foliage and a Greek Style border. It has two handles closely applied to each side.  The design is picked out in a black glaze against a pale ash glaze ground. On the base is the Guerin impressed stamp and an incused number 632.

The vase has been fired in a wood fired kiln to about 1250 degrees centigrade (stoneware).  This was the technique invariably used by Guerin and it followed the local tradition of pottery making in the area of Bouffioulx.

Guerin won a medal at the Paris Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in 1925 and was exhibited in 1937 as well as internationally.
