This very fine  painting shows G David's bookshop with St Edward the Martyr's Church opposite.  The painting is a complex creation, with pen and ink over a pencil outline and using wax resist for tonal effect. The painting is signed lower right.

Ronald Maddox PPRI RWS RBA (1930-2018) created artwork ranging from fine art to commercial design. Born in Surrey, he studied at the St Albans School of Arts and later the Hertfordshire School of Art & Design, Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art, and the London School of Printmaking and Graphic Art.

He went on to forge a successful career as a freelance artist, illustrator, and designer working for eminent British companies including British Rail, the Countryside Commission, British Waterways, British Gas, British Telecom and Channel Four. Between 1972 and 1989 he worked for the Post Office and Royal Mail, designing stamps, first-day presentation packs and posters which often featured British architecture, rural life, and the countryside.

Maddox's work was influenced by Modern British artists including John Nash, Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden, John Piper and Graham Sutherland.  He himself showed in work in many prestigious exhibitions and won numerous award. He was the President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours for 25 years.
