This superb pair of Retro candlesticks are made in Vallauris in Southern France, a town renowned for its ceramics, particularly those of the Massier brothers at the turn of the 20th century, and later Picasso, who came to live in Vallauris in 1948.

The candlesticks are also modelled with a hole at the side which would enable them to be converted to lamps, although they have been used as candlesticks.  They are earthenware, slip cast, with some wonderful dribble colours over a black ground, finished with a glossy glaze. There is a slight craquelure and irridescence to the black glaze, which is also inside the base, with a painted "Vallauris" and the number 270.
